UPCS Civil Services

The Civil Services Exams in India are one of the most prestigious and competitive examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). These exams are designed to recruit candidates for various civil services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and other allied services.

Eligibility:

Nationality: Indian citizenship is required for IAS, IPS, and IFS.

Age Limit: Generally, candidates must be between 21 and 32 years of age. Age relaxation is provided for reserved categories.

Educational Qualification: A candidate must hold a degree from a recognized university or possess an equivalent qualification.

Exam Structure:

The Civil Services Examination is conducted in three stages:

Preliminary Examination (Prelims)

Main Examination (Mains)

Personality Test (Interview)

Preliminary Examination:

Objective Type: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Papers: Two compulsory papers

General Studies Paper I: Covers current events, history, geography, polity, economic and social development, environmental ecology, biodiversity, and general science.

General Studies Paper II (CSAT): Comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, analytical ability, decision-making, problem-solving, basic numeracy, and data interpretation.

Marks: Each paper is 200 marks

Duration: 2 hours for each paper

Note: CSAT is a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.

Descriptive Type: Essay writing, descriptive questions

Papers: Nine papers in total

Paper A: Indian language (Qualifying)

Paper B: English (Qualifying)

Paper I: Essay

Paper II: General Studies I (Indian Heritage and Culture, History, and Geography of the World and Society)

Paper III: General Studies II (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International relations)

Paper IV: General Studies III (Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Environment, Security, and Disaster Management)

Paper V: General Studies IV (Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude)

Paper VI: Optional Subject Paper I

Paper VII: Optional Subject Paper II

Marks: Each paper is 250 marks (except qualifying papers)

Duration: 3 hours for each paper

Personality Test (Interview):

Marks: 275 marks

Focus: Assess the personal suitability of the candidate for a career in public service by a board of competent and unbiased observers. The interview is more of a purposive conversation intended to explore the mental qualities and analytical ability of the candidate.
